Black Star Pastry*

"Christopher Thé and his team confirms that
good honest slow cooking enlivened with fresh experimentation
will bake delicious moments for all."

As I foreshadowed, once pastry cravings start they must be satisfied. Next stop on this food pilgrimage was clearly headed towards a Black Star... Pastry! Hidden in a cul-de-sac, it is only a short walk from the myriad of cafes and Thai restaurants littered along the main road of Newtown.

As I walk inside, the first thing I noticed was the simplistic but well presented displays. Upon closer inspection, I was pleased to find a platter of white macarons that offered the gourmet flavours of Chai or Coconut and Passionfruit.

Baskets of Croissants suspended by metal stands reminded me of a typical setup in a science laboratory... where new food experiments are being created daily!

Lamb Shank, Red Wine and Vegetable Pie

Small round tables were just the right size for coffee and a plate of sweet treats to share.

Coconut and Passionfruit Macaron

Gluten-Free Dark Chocolate Brownie with Macadamias
(Crumbly surface with a light crunch, the perfect ratio of nuts to chocolate and each bite is filled with Fudginess. What more can you ask from this classic dessert treat?)

Lemon Meringue with Basil Jelly
(Like a pyramid, there are hidden treasures buried inside the centre waiting to be discovered.)

Chocolate Éclair
Great Valhrona chocolate with a bitter chocolate glaze
(Just in case you forget where you are... there are always sweet reminders of their name- and what's more, they are eatable! The star of the show is spotted, dressed in black.)

Finally, my pastry craving is satisfied (for the time being anyways!).
The desserts are delicious and I dare say, comparable to Bourke Street Bakery.

  1. Next time, don't forget to try the watermelon cake... so refreshing! This place is a hidden gem for sure and the chefs are fantastically friendly! Stop by before they open and have a chat with them.
